It's such a weird collection of songs that I did some reading into where most of it came from and it gave me a different appreciation. I think the most enjoyable part of it is them trying different stuff. Like 'He'll Have to Go,' is this crushing country cover and something I'd never really expect from them (especially SM era). It's one of my favorite tracks they've ever done.

Then there's the weird loop-y undeveloped b-side (Wigs, Silhouttes, The Guest that Stayed Forever, Old Spoonface). I came across some interview with Paddy where he basically admits that early on he saw b-sides as a chance for throwaways or experiments because he didn't want to waste good songs on non-album tracks. They make sense in that context, but they still have some nice hooks and are interesting when put in that context along with the fact that they're all b-sides to SM singles. The pre-Swoon stuff is pretty good, I think. The Devil Has all the Best Tunes and Walk On is a nice side a/b. On a certain level, it's just cool hearing unpolished efforts from a band whose album output is anything but.

Outside of that, you have some real hits here. I guess I'd start with these if you're having problems getting into the collection as a whole: spinning belinda nero the zero real life (just around the corner) just because i can - could see people putting this is 'post-Jordan 'uncool' stuff, but whatever. I really dig it, reminds me of XTC. If you don't love me the sound of crying he'll have to go - a cover, but it'd probably make my top 10 prefab tracks. The yearning loins I was into this really hard for a few months, so I could go on. I didn't mention Tornado, Dandy of the Danube, and Bearpark and those are all great songs as well.

Also, they were on the greatest hits compilation, Life of Surprises, and had their own videos. The sound of crying was actually their second highest charting single after king of rock n roll which really surprised me. I love it, but still kind of weird. I guess dear god was pretty popular, too.

I really liked Mysterious at the end of side A and Jewel Thief opening side 2. Mysterious as the closer rather than the Songs of Danny Galway leaves things on a different note. I guess it's more in the overall vibe though. Can't wait to buy this. Edit: annnnd, the tracklisting in the original file was just alphabetical order.
